Rogue is a dungeon crawling video game first developed by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman around 1980. It was a favorite on college Unix systems in the early to mid-1980s, in part due to the procedural generation of game content.

Valkyrie Profile is a role-playing video game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation. It was released on December 22, 1999 in Japan and on August 29, 2000 in North America. An enhanced port of the game was later released for the PlayStation Portable under the name Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on March 2, 2006 in Japan, July 18, 2006 in North America, and April 27, 2007 in Europe.

The battle system revolves around Elements, which are used to grant magical powers, as well as to summon huge monsters. Cladun, short for "Classic Dungeon", is a retro-twinged sprite-based dungeon crawler for the PSP, developed by Nippon Ichi. Cladun features the ability to swap between regular and "8-bit" styles (both in graphics and music), and has ad hoc co-op multiplayer.

Diablo is an isometric strategy RPG and one of the most well-known examples of the action-RPG subgenre.
