Partially based on a little-known anime television series by Triangle Staff that aired in 1997. It is a fantasy role-playing game where the player takes the role of a mermaid trying to find the secrets of her race. The game uses a turn-based fighting system with special moves and attacks. The blocky graphics were typical for a PlayStation title of the era.
Based on an anime series from the mid-90s, the plot goes something like this: ages ago the goddess Aphrodite created the world, but the jealous Merdam, also known as the Destroyer, contested her control. After a great battle, the Destroyer was locked away forever, and the denizens of Meremanoia flourished, building a civilization in their Creatrice's image - peaceful, compassionate, and very female. This is how the Church and the royal family choose to interpret things, at least. What the priestly Mer-Lion caste doesn't like to talk about is the sacred text that foretells the coming of a new Destroyer, one who looks like a Meremanoid but is not. Words cannot describe this being - but only because the language of the mermaids contains no masculine adjectives. In other words, the Y chromosome is believed to be the Harbinger of the Apocalypse. There are underwater mountains, caverns, and broad expanses of sand that for lack of a better term are referred to as the desert. One cave has a large field of high-density muck that passes for a swamp. There's a region of underwater volcanoes, and another one set beneath an ice cap. All of this terrain is explored in three dimensions. Mermaids are natural born swimmers, so instead of just walking around the hero has to take all directions into account.

The story spans two discs and follows the story of Serge, a young man who is able to cross dimensions. Suddenly he is pulled between worlds, trying to figure out his own past at the same time. The graphics are bright and beautiful, utilizing the PlayStation's capabilities to the fullest. The polygonal character models are huge and detailed, and the pre-rendered backgrounds are immaculately detailed. The music is composed and arranged by Yasunori Mitsuda, and features very realistic-sounding synthesizers. The events of this game take place several years after Elk and Arc faced their ultimate enemy in "Arc the Lad II". You control Alec, a teenager whose entire village was destroyed by an unknown evil - an event that was later called "The Great Disaster". He was saved by a mysterious Hunter. Since then, growing peacefully in a village he was brought to, which was like a new home for the survivors of the Great Disaster, Alec dreams about meeting the Hunter again, and becoming a Hunter himself. Together with his best friend Lutz he tries his luck in nearby towns, receiving small Hunter jobs, until the fate crosses the ways of the two young people with a mysterious organization called the Academy. And there their adventure really begins... The gameplay of this third installment of Arc the Lad series is very similar to that of the predecessor. You fight enemies in turn-based battles, and can move freely on the battlefield, positioning your party members the way you like.
