It was released in Japan on July 13, 2000, and it was the first Yu-Gi-Oh! video game to be released outside of Japan, with a United States release date of March 19, 2002. The objective is to advance through the game, following the first season of the anime. Mainly, you come to Duel Academy to become the King of Games. At first, you will be in Slifer Red Dorm with dropout boy ranks. You have to Duel and test in order to achieve a higher dorm and rank. When you win duels, you will get DP for buying booster packs in order to improve your Deck and skills.

In Dungeon Dice monsters, there is a tiled board of 13 x 19 tiles (13 tiles wide) on which play is conducted. On either end of the board sits a "Monster Lord" (on the 7th tile from each side on the row closest to the players) representing either player. Each Monster Lord has 3 Life Points. The first player to lose all their Life Points loses. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime, these were referred to as "Heart Points".

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II: Dark Duel Stories is a video game for the Game Boy Color, the sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Although the gameplay is still much simpler than the OCG, this game introduced 355 new cards, for a total of 720 (in contrast with the 365 total cards of its predecessor). Trap Cards and Ritual Spell Cards were first included in this game.
