One day, a fox kit living in the Romus Forest contracts the apparently uncurable "Romus disease", leaving his mother distraught. She remembers her grandmother's story of a cure hidden deep within the forest, a piece of fried tofu found at a shrine. Both mother and son now set off to find the legendary remedy, braving predators and other hazards to save the kit's life. Harry Fox won the Story Class prize in Micro Cabin's 1st Adventure Game Contest, and was marketed as a graphic text adventure for all audiences. It is separate from the later MSX remake, Harry Fox Special, forgoing RPG elements to focus on puzzles.

Ni no Kuni is a series of role-playing games developed by Level-5. The series chiefly follows the young Oliver, and his journey to another world to save his mother and stop the beckoning evil. The games utilize several magic elements, allowing players to use magical abilities during gameplay, as well as creatures known as imajinn/familiars, which can be tamed for suitability during battle.

Pokemon Crystal is an enhanced version of Pokemon Gold and Silver and a role-playing game played from a top-down perspective. As in the earlier versions, the player explores the Johto region, catches and trains Pokemon, and battles other Trainers in turn-based combat while earning Gym Badges and filling out the Pokedex. Pokemon Silver is a role-playing game played from a top-down perspective, in which the player explores the world, catches wild creatures called Pokemon, and trains them through turn-based battles. Set in the Johto region, it continues the core loop of building a team, earning Gym Badges, and completing the Pokedex by capturing, evolving, and trading creatures. This entry introduced 100 new Pokemon along with additions such as a real-time internal clock that affects certain events, Pokemon breeding, held items, and two new creature types. It supports linking with other games in the series to trade and battle.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a platform video game acting as a prequel to 1990's Super Mario World. The game casts players as Yoshi as he escorts Baby Mario through 48 levels in order to reunite him with his brother Luigi, who had been kidnapped by Baby Bowser's minions. As a Super Mario series platformer, Yoshi runs and jumps to reach the end of the level while solving puzzles and collecting items. In a style new to the series, the game has a hand-drawn aesthetic and is the first to have Yoshi as its main character. The game introduces his signature abilities to flutter jump, produce eggs from swallowed enemies, and transform into vehicles.
